Linear switches move smoothly with no bump and tend to be quieter, tactile switches have a noticeable bump partway through the keypress that helps with feel and accuracy, and clicky switches add an audible click on top of that bump. The right choice comes down to personal preference for feel and how much noise is acceptable in your environment.
Hot-swap sockets let you change switches without soldering, which is useful if you like to experiment or aren't sure which switch type you'll prefer long-term. If you already know exactly what you want and don't plan to tinker, a soldered board isn't a dealbreaker.
Full-size boards keep the number pad and dedicated function row, tenkeyless (TKL) drops the number pad for a smaller footprint, and compact layouts like 60% or 65% save even more desk space at the cost of some dedicated keys. Pick based on how much desk space you have and whether you rely on the keys being removed.
Keycap material affects feel, sound, and how well the legends hold up over time. Common options include ABS, which can develop a shine with heavy use, and PBT, which tends to resist wear better. Beyond durability, wall thickness and profile shape also influence typing feel more than most people expect.
Foam layers, gaskets, and case material all influence how a board sounds and feels when typing. If you work in a shared space or on calls often, a quieter switch and a dampened case will matter more to you than to someone typing alone with headphones on.
Wired connections avoid any concern about latency or battery life and are generally the simpler, more reliable choice for competitive typing or gaming. Wireless adds convenience and a cleaner desk, and modern wireless keyboards have closed much of the gap, but battery charging is an extra step to plan around.
